POISONS TO POTIONS
If you’re taking Ozempic, you’re injecting venom of a lizard. The discovery of a hormone in the venom of a Gila Monster is the special ingredient that helps diabetics – and makes people skinny. Ozempic has been so successful that it’s started a “venom rush,” where scientists are discovering which animal’s venoms can treat what ails you. Bite! Sting! Cure! is the new documentary film from Toronto’s Red Trillium Films. It’s an adventure that seeks life-saving treatments from the most poisonous animals on earth.

Millions of years of evolution have perfected venom as a weapon – but each animal’s own venom soup is a unique blend of thousands of ingredients. The trick is in finding those one or two proteins that can fight cancer, seal a wound, protect you from a heart attack – even solve your erectile dysfunction.

Science has discovered an entirely new medical frontier: there’s potential in venom for treating chronic pain and arthritis, and even diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Join us for a journey into modern-day alchemy – where the stuff that can kill you might potentially cure you.

BITE! STING! CURE! from Red Trillium Films has already been greenlit by CBC for The Nature of Things. Andrew Gregg is the director and writer, and Deborah Parks is the producer. The documentary will be available in early 2027.
